The Evolution of My I-Search Research Topic
Currently, I’ve decided to research pre-workout and workout supplements such as creatine. I would like to uncover whether or not these products benefit or inhibit overall health and performance.
Personally, I have taken a supplement called “jack3d” and noticed that I became quite jittery and aggressive, leaving me wondering what ingredients led to this, and whether these effects were detrimental to the overall health of my vital organs, especially the kidneys. By researching this topic, I would like to answer mainly one question: are there benefits to taking these supplements in small amounts while partaking in intense weightlifting or cardio activities, or is it better to avoid these supplements completely?
I’ve recently become very interested in maximizing athletic performance, so I thought this would fit in perfectly. For example, in the Wind-Up, I wrote a research article about the effects of soft drinks and other carbonated beverages on an athlete’s body. This topic will complement my research on that article perfectly.
Skimming through Barnes and Noble’s site, I came across a book entitled “The Ultimate Sports Nutrition Bible.” On the small summary, it said that it includes information about workout supplements. I’m not positive that this will be the book I decide to use, but it is an idea. I’m also hoping to come across books that take a both a negative and positive look at these products.
As I continued my research, however, I came about a new topic that i found much more interesting--blood doping. Therefore, my original idea of pre-workout and workout supplements was the seed that led me to where I am now. My new topic is quite interesting to me because I am an avid cyclist, triathlete, and runner. All of these sports happen to be endurance sports--the sports in which blood doping is most common. Essentially, I'm doing this research to gain a better understanding of the benefits as well as the risks involved in these illegal actions.
